Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ coming to Broadway?
I just read a very interesting article over at Time entitled “Zombies Are The New Vampires.” I decided to not post it here simply because a lot of it is re-hashing stuff you already know, and the entire article is a thinly-veiled promotion of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which we’ve already talked about in length here on Send More Cops*.
However, during the article’s rundown of the various pop culture entities that are involved in zombiedom, there was a brief mention of a bit of news that I somehow missed when it was originally reported back in January:
Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is coming to Broadway.
This isn’t just some off-the-wall article either. According to Playbill, the rights to take the song/video to the stage have been bought by Nederlander Organization, who’s responsible for bringing The Who’s Tommy to Broadway, as well as the upcoming Julie Taymor-directed Spider-Man show (with music by U2… for real) to the stage.
Says James L. Nederlander: “I love the idea of making ‘Thriller’ a musical. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, boy has big secret, now what…”
And we all know what that big secret it. I think this could actually be a pretty great idea, if it ever actually comes to fruition. Despite the fact that in recent years, he’s gone batshit crazy, Michael Jackson still has obsessive fans all over the world, and a show with this kind of universal appeal is something that Broadway could really use right now in a time when shows are closing in record numbers due to poor ticket sales (thanks, Recession!). Save us, Little Mikey, with your zombie hoards.
My only regret is that I still couldn’t afford a ticket. At what point in zombie blogging to people start sending me free stuff?
*I’ve got no problem with this, as I’m rooting for the book and the author’s success — we need more zombie love in the world — but it seemed a bit redundant for me to post.
